Obituary

Rose Mary was born the fourth of six children to Josiah and Rose Layton. She was always irritated that she was a girl Jr. and very specific about the spelling of her name. "It's 2 words, 1 name." Rose Mary lived in Connecticut for a bit, while the family welcomed her two younger siblings. Then they moved back to New Jersey. Rose Mary grew up primarily running the shores of Lake Lenape and surrounding townships with her friends, who were each the best at something, according to the legends. Rose Mary was in the Girl Scouts all the way into high school. Rose Mary grew up happy and loved in a her big family. Rose Mary graduated from Newton High School in 1971. She moved to Florida with her older brother, Joe, where she met Lee Mapel. Her eldest son with Frank Pehrson, Shaun Mapel, was born in 1972. Rose Mary and Lee married later in 1972, and Lee adopted Shaun. Rose Mary and Lee went on to have two more children, Michael and Susan. Lee was in the Air Force, so the family traveled a lot, which Rose Mary loved. Rose Mary was an avid soft ball player, special education teacher, swimmer, baseball referee, drafter, and an interior designer. She enjoyed music, dancing, the beach, the mountains and all the wild places. Hers was the home all the kids flocked to when her kids were young, and there were always a ton of kids at her house. Rose Mary loved her family, pets, friends and a good party. Rose Mary was divorced in 2003 and never remarried. She moved close to her children and enjoyed spending her later years in an RV in the woods. She loved the sound of the rain on the tin roof and the wind in the trees. She loved her children and her pets like they were children. She was known best in high school and the rest of her life for "having a loud mouth that never shuts up" to quote her senior yearbook. Rose Mary lived a life full of laughter and sass, surrounded by people who were equally frustrated by her big personality and loved her for it at the same time. She died surrounded by her children and daughter-in-law. Rose Mary was preceeded in death by her parents, Rose and Josiah H and her siblings Josiah F, Peter, Marion, and Kevin. Rose Mary is survived by her brother, Robert "Bob"; her children Shaun, Michael, and Susan; her grandchildren Jesse, Jordan, Aspen, Haley, Nicholas, Christina, and David. Rose Mary will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. The world is a darker place in her absence.
