Mr. Robert "Sarge" Douglas Roberts, age 87, of Golden Mountain Community, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Life Care in Sparta, TN.

Mr. Roberts was born in Sparta, TN. on February 28, 1930 to William Vance Roberts and Minnie Alice Smith Roberts. Mr. Roberts served his country in the Korean War and Vietnam War; after serving the United States Army over 26 years, he retired.

In his service to our country his accomplishments were National Defense Service Medal-w/OLC, Good Conduct Medal 8th Award, Distinguished Service Cross Medal, Purple Heart 3d OLC, Silver Star, United Nations Service Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 BRONZE STARS, Korean Service Medal with 1 Silver Star, Combat Infantryman Badge 2d Award, Bronze Star Medal w/OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/OLC, 6 Overseas Service Bars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/1960 Device, Pathfinder Badge, and a member of the Legion of Valor.

Preceded in death by his parents; wife of 62 years Betty Rae Roberts; brothers and sisters, Beulah Mae, Vera Lee, Jessie Edwina, Margaret Rae, O.V., Mamie Christine, Mary Dibrell, William Carl, Betty Ronea, Lella Jean, Vivian Allison, Richard Lavaughn, Brenda Lou, Lequita Joy and Ruby Nell.

Survivors include children, Robert Steven Roberts & wife Rethia, Dennis Lynn Roberts & wife Deborah, Sally Ann Shockley & husband Thomas Wayne Shockley, Wendy Marie Wagner & husband Gene Wagner, and David Lee Roberts & wife Patsy; brother, J.V. Roberts & wife Jean, sister, Linda Sue McGinnis; sister in law. Johnnie Roberts;11 grandchildren, Heather Roberts, Jeffery Roberts & wife Alicia , Jacob Roberts & wife Fallon, Caleb Roberts, Haley Roberts, Jonathan Roberts, Laura Sue Dyer & husband Jared, Daniel Shockley & wife Bobbie, Sarah Reece, Becky Sue Shockley, and Josh Roberts; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews from Tennessee, Alabama, California, Alaska, and Pennsylvania.

ARRANGEMETS:

Funeral services will be held at East Sparta Church of God, Saturday, May 20 , 2017 at 11:00 a.m., Officiating will be Bishop Charles Dotson and Lieutenant Colonel Retired, Bardon Blizzard. Interment will be in the Turner-Roberts Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at East Sparta Church of God, Friday, May 19, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.

Pallbearers, Jacob Roberts, Caleb Roberts, Kayne Tollison, Jeffery Roberts, Jonathan Roberts and Daniel Shockley.
